Iyengar Yoga is based on the teachings of B.K.S Iyengar who was born in 1914 in Bellur India and who died in 2015 in Pune India. He authored many books including Light On Yoga which has been a source book for many generations of yoga students. Named one of Time magazines 100 most influential people, Mr. Iyengar is credited with bringing the ancient art of yoga into the modern world by creating a methodical and progressive system of teaching which emphasizes correct alignment and safety. This method can be compared to modern day movement modalities such as Physical Therapy, Kinesiology, and Feldenkrais. Yogacharya Iyengar brought yoga to the west in the 60's and 70's, the beginning of today's explosive growth in yoga, and with it the invention of yoga props. He developed and refined a complete array of yoga props, including ropes, belts, and blocks, which allow practitioners of all ages and levels of fitness to achieve correct alignment, and a broader study of the posture, helping them to experience the state of meditation in action. Mr. Iyengar also revolutionized yoga therapeutics, gaining recognition for yoga as treatment for many medical conditions. B.K.S Iyengar has helped bring his childhood village, Bellur, up to speed with the rest of India. He created the Bellur Trust , and built a free hospital, water treatment facilities, India's first temple dedicated to Patanjali, and a free primary, secondary and tertiary school which supplies uniforms, books and a hot lunch for the children of Bellur and those living in the surrounding villages. His daughter Geeta, and son, Prashant, are also accomplished teachers and writers.
